Damaraland Communal Concessions, Namibia
Namibia indisputably has to be called one of Africa’s finest and most scenic hunting destinations. Since 1997 a number of communal conservancies have been registered under Namibian conservancy legislation, allowing the population residing in rural communal areas to reap an income from the wildlife. Although the land belongs to the Government of Namibia, the management of the wildlife in these recognized areas is administered in consultation with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, resident communal management associations and supporting NGO’s.  These vast areas have no form of fencing enclosing them and are home to large herds of antelope species.
Damaraland is situated in the north-western region of Namibia. Cut from east to west by ancient dry river courses, some of glacial origin creating deep canyons, these riverbeds are lined with thorny acacia trees forming linear oases in the desert and so providing a lifeline of survival for a host of unexpected animals, including the desert-dwelling elephant and the rare black rhino.
